Easter!

Kellen had lots of fun seeing all of his family this weekend and going on an Easter egg hunt yesteryday.
We have quite a collection of photos: Kellen wearing my sunglass's at Lee's mom's yesterday, Lee and Kellen in their Easter best, Kellen with his Easter basket, talking on the his telephone at lunch with my family, and the carrot cake I made for Lee's dad's dinner tonight.

Turnkey Teaching Plans on Overindulgence
Offer Flexibility, Strong Content, Empowerment

There are dozens of reasons to consider Jean Illsley Clarke’s new parenting education curriculum on overindulgence, and here are some of the most important:

* The topic. Overindulgence is more—and more problematic—than “spoiling.” As David Bredehoft, who is one of Clarke’s co-authors for “How Much Is Enough?,” points out, overindulged kids often grow up to be greedy, materialistic, self-centered adults. They have difficulty sustaining relationships with spouses, children, friends and colleagues.

* The research. “How Much Is Enough,” written by Clarke, Bredehoft and Connie Dawson, is based on years of research and surveys of hundreds of people who identified themselves as having been overindulged as children. The research continues, making even more data available for Clarke’s curriculum.

* The content. Besides explaining overindulgence and its risks, and describing how to avoid it, Clarke has created a program that simultaneously teaches child development, parent/child communication skills, structure and discipline, loving support, and affirmations for growth. Clarke has also included two new parenting education concepts: the Developmental Parenting Highway, and the Parenting Code.

As an experienced instructor and speaker, Clarke understands what parent educators need. That’s why her “Leader’s Guide” for “How Much Is Enough?” offers:

* a 365-page step-by-step manual with suggested scripts and with call-outs that illustrate which handouts and posters to use with each lesson

* 74 handouts and posters and 43 interactive exercises that have all been tested in a variety of settings and class formats, with a variety of instructors and participants

* flexibility in adapting the six-meeting curriculum to your program’s format or excerpting components for home visiting, workshops or coaching sessions.

* the opportunity to develop skills and processes that can be used in any group work

* your choice of a traditional printed guide or a downloadable PDF

Developed with sensitivity to the many audiences parent educators serve, this “Leader’s Guide”

* is positive and not prescriptive

* encourages independent thinking

* empowers parents

Finally, the “Leader’s Guide” is an excellent example of curriculum development and can be used in undergraduate and graduate-level pedagogy courses.
